Favorite Concert Photos of 2011

This year for me wasn’t as crazy as last year in the photographing of live concerts department. But it still was a magical year of great music.  In 2012 I hope to see some fantastic artists and take my photography of concerts to a new level. The level being 11!

GORILLAZ GORILLAZ GORILLAZ

click photo for more pictures

The Gorillaz are one of my favorites bands still around. They were tops on my bucketlist of bands I wanted to see because they don’t tour much and had never been to the NW. So when I heard they were coming close ie: Seattle, I had to go, MUST SEE. I bought my tickets as soon as they went on sale and thought floor seats would be a good idea not thinking it would be filled with seats. As I was walking into Key Arena last night I noticed row after row after row of seats. Looked down at my ticket and noticed row AA seat 10. My eyes got big and I knew what that ment. FRONT ROW! I had sat front row before and I have had floor tickets before and they are not the same. FRONT ROW means no little people standing in front of you screaming I LOVE YOU DAMON! I do feel bad because after I got done shooting my 3 songs with the photo pass I had to kick out a handicap girl from my seat. Not really, I didn’t kick her out, I stood behind her enjoying the show then a usher noticed something was up and kicked them to there seat 3 feet away. All things good for the Handicap girl if you ask, she got back up out of her wheelchair and stood next to me and was the only person to high 5 Damon Albarn so it had a happy ending, And you thought she would just be sitting there how the Bloodhound Gang put it “with handicap faces” No she was beyond happy and a tad crazy. Doesn’t beat the kid that was to my left who rocked out more then I had seen anyone rock out before at a concert. I’m thinking he was thinking just like I was, BEST SHOW EVER. One of the Gorillaz stage guys walked over to him and hand delivered drum sticks to him. Pretty dope for the kid, I didn’t think he could of got any happier.

Yes, it was the best I could of expected from the show, BUT it didn’t come without problems. The jerk face at Gate 4 at Key Arena had a power trip and said NO, your not on the list. He asked who my contact was I told him and he said no idea who that is, most people have the right contact name and that isn’t it, so get a hold of your contact and figure it out. SO, I DID. Got my friend Promo Joe who is amazing and my contact and we walked up to the guy and he say’s, Oh hey Joe, what’s up.. REALLY. Short story long, we got the photo pass figured out late of course and I missed getting shots of N*E*R*D*. After they played I ran back to my car a few miles away got my camera and ran back to the venue with 10 minutes to spare, I thought I was going to die.  But it would of been worth it because it was GORILLAZ

The Year comes to an end

The Crowd Goes Wild/p>

With the year coming to an end  something about the second half of December that makes people reflect on the past year. Today in one of Flickr specialized groups, Concert Photography. The forum post/question was asked:

Favorite photo of 2009:
Favorite gig of 2009:
Greatest achievement of 2009:
What you like to achieve in 2010:
“I added one, biggest pisser of 2009:”

I had a very fun year in the world of concert photography I shot 22 concerts and 42 bands. It was a huge improvement compared to 2009 when I only shot 14 bands. I didn’t even shoot a band until mid April in 2009 so pretty much I had a busy busy summer of concert photography. I love it, it’s a major time pressure because you usually only get to shoot 3 songs unless the venue guy can’t count like what happened last week. He flagged me over and said “that’s 3″ i responded with “are you sure?” Of course he was sure, little did he know I know how to count and respect the bands. The show was part of our concert series and we were recording all the shows so after I was kicked out, he also didn’t give me a chance to show my VIP wrist band, the same color the bands were wearing. I get a little diva when things like this happen when it’s our radio stations concerts. After a little texting I was back in VIP standing next to the guy who only can count to two. I’m sure he noticed me because the next 3 nights I was also standing by him watching all the shows and taking photo’s. I don’t know if he felt dumb or a little weird but I could careless. It also could be my karma for my answer for my biggest pisser of 2009. So here we go my answers:

Favorite photo of 2009:
This was a very tough one to answer but it didn’t take me long to figure it out, it was between two different photo’s at this show and between two different photo’s at another show. Which ended up being my favorite show of 2009.

Favorite gig of 2009:
This was my favorite concert to shoot because after the 3 songs that I had to take photo’s I sat 3 feet back in the front row watching a very good show.

Dave Matthews Band – Gorge Amphitheater September 4, 2009

Greatest achievement of 2009:
being able to work in radio and getting tons of photo passes. Most of the time it’s a cheap little wristband but with the big bands you get a pass that is a giant sticker.

What you like to achieve in 2010:
shoot MUSE in 2010, get a photo published. Muse is the only big band that I know of so far coming through Portland but they are super fun from what I’ve heard a great live band.

“I added one, biggest pisser of 2009:”
Getting my pass pulled 15 minutes before the blink 182/weezer show in Seattle. I had my great little point-and-shoot and was still able to get some decent shots.  Blink 182 is my favorite band in the world and this would of been a dream to be able to shoot them with a good camera and have that experience. It gives me something to look forward too, unless they break up again.

Blink 182

With all this that happened in 2009 I can’t wait to see how it goes in 2010. I have a ton of fun shooting concerts. Some of my favorite things, music and photography.
