We tried to talk to the big light in the sky

We decided to go for a hike once the sun set after we had set up camp for the night. We walked around an area that was a lagoon and made our way up to an area with a paved road and a lot of lights up in the trees. I had a feeling it was the lighthouse but I had no idea what to expect. It was like reaching the end of a rainbow and having this as our pot of gold. The air was damp and the fog was just hanging around without making it a complete washout.

Guts II

Trisha and I got up super early for this trip, I think a few bars were still open matter of fact. The distance from Portland to Mount St. Helens is just far enough away that you have to leave really early to catch the sunrise. So far I’ve made a couple trips to catch a sunrise and I’ve seen it every time.  One of these day’s we’ll do the opposite and catch it at sunset. I’ll have to use what is an amazing IOS App TPE “The Photographers Ephemeris” to track the location of the sunset location. But it might just be more fun shooting from the hip and just doing it.

sometimes you have to gamble on the weather

sometimes you have to gamble on the weather
Tomorrow or better yet 8 hours from now I’m headed back to Mount St Helens with the girlfriend to see some magic at the mountain. This morning had a shocking development. As you can see at the bottom, a lot of clouds. I had to drive through that pretty much the whole way from Portland that morning. With less than a mile from the top at the Johnston Ridge Observatory the sky opened up and revealed this.

Ice Cave

Ice Cave, originally uploaded by Squid Vicious.

When leaving our campground at the base of Mt Adams at Forlorn Lakes we came across a point of interest which was an Ice Cave. Two steps down towards the unknown the temperature dropped 40 degrees. We moved along the icy floor not being able to tell if it was a skate rink or just patches of ice. Inching around the cave we realized that my back up headlamp and my little flashlight were not enough. We explored a little more and it was pitch black, beyond anything I’d ever experienced. We hung out a little bit longer not really getting too far from the entrance. We decided we will be back to explore more and maybe doing some trail exploring along the McClellan Trail but next time in the cave we’ll have more light and clothes.
